Do you speak any foreign languages? Would you like to? How often do you go abroad and find yourself needing help ordering in a restaurant, or perhaps your career could benefit from speaking English? Some people believe it’s essential to understand someone from a different country and cultural background, while others prefer to stay within their comfort zone. What about you?
Let’s explore some pros and cons of learning English in modern times. Firstly, it’s a bit strange, isn’t it? I mean the way they talk. One of my students, an ESL teacher, jokingly remarked that the pronunciation of certain vowels in English sounds as if it came from a drunken person. While this was said in jest, the underlying truth is that one must overcome a certain amount of stress to grasp the nuances of foreign vowels; in other words, building different non-verbal associations based on those sounds requires effort. It’s natural for us as human beings to seek new horizons, making learning a foreign language an ideal pursuit for those with basic curiosity, confidence, and a willingness to embrace the unknown world beyond their home. This is why learning English, or any other foreign language, often comes more easily to children. Exploring and learning are simply in their nature. Many adults love traveling, which entails learning about new cultures, traditions, customs, and often, a new language. Hence, we can conclude that exploring and learning can be an integral part of one’s personality, making the journey of learning a foreign language enjoyable—especially for those who maintain an open mind.
I won’t claim that learning English is easy, but I will say that English is among the least complex languages to learn. As an experienced ESL teacher, I can affirm that English is one of the least confusing languages to understand. Moreover, the realities of life represented by linguistic concepts are similar across many languages, which is why English remains closely connected to the experiences of those learning it, regardless of their mother tongue.
Many of you have likely seen new advertising campaigns proclaiming that you will have fun learning English. You absolutely will! We plan to introduce various interactive learning projects based on real-life events, many of which will surprise and amuse you. However, we must admit that memorizing a list of irregular verbs isn’t particularly enjoyable. So, before deciding to study English, consider your objectives—why do you want to learn English? Are you looking to take a Cambridge Exam for an officially recognized title, or do you merely want the ability to express yourself while traveling?
Additionally, reflect on your state of mind. Yes, you’ll need to do some digging to save time and money. Are you a courageous person? Are you prepared to sound silly at times, especially as a beginner? Are you willing to commit to mastering irregular verbs and phrasal verbs, even when they seem tedious?
